Maxwell-type probability distributions describe the distribution of properties, such as velocity or kinetic energy, in a large collection of particles.
Notice how the prevalence of states in the right-hand 'tail' of the distribution increases rapidly for smaller values of the scaling factor 'a', though the mean changes slowly. For the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of particles velocities in an ideal gas, a = sqrt(kT/m).
